Welcome to

St George the Martyr

We are a vibrant, world-diverse church, with a rich history dating back to at least 1122. Steeped in history, our iconic building stands in the heart of Borough and is a sacred place where generations have encountered the divine presence of God within our changing neighbourhood throughout the past 900 years.

Our church has long been a destination for pilgrims, famously inspiring Geoffrey Chaucer, and we have cherished connections to literary giant Charles Dickens. Today, through embracing sacred history as Living Practice St George’s continues to serve the spiritual and cultural needs of our city, offering a space where ancient wisdom meets contemporary life.

We are a Christ-centered, outward-focused community on a sacred journey to encounter the presence of God in all things; not as a distant ideal but as a present reality in truth, beauty, goodness, and unity. We walk together on a pilgrimage of discovery, inviting each person to experience these divine qualities in worship, fellowship, service, and daily life.

You will be welcome here, we think you might belong.

“A place to be known in the heart of our city”
