Weddings

Marrying in church is personal, meaningful and spiritual - just as you would want it to be. Churches are special and unique places to get married in - the prayers, promises and the whole service of celebration become part of your marriage, on the day itself and beyond.

We are delighted to receive enquiries about getting married at St George the Martyr. Like any Anglican parish church, we are required to observe certain legal rules when it comes to marriages and we are happy to discuss these with you.

If you would like to get married at St Georges, then you

  • Or if you live in another parish, you will need to attend St George’s for at least 6 months before you can get married here,

  • Or need to have a connection to the parish (either have been baptized here, or have a parent or grandparent who belonged here).

You can get married at any time of the day and on most days of the week. Please note that weddings do not take place during Lent (from Ash Wednesday to Easter). This is a solemn time of year as we prepare to commemorate the death of Jesus and celebrate his resurrection.

Civil Partnerships and Same Sex Weddings

St George the Martyr is an inclusive community where LGBTi+ people are welcomed and affirmed. Our Rector would be delighted to help you to prepare prayerfully for your Civil Partnership or Wedding.

At the moment the Church of England does not permit the solemnisation of same-sex marriages. This is a source of sadness for us and something we are committed to see change. It will however be possible very soon for same-sex couples to have their civil marriage blessed in Church and whilst this legislation doesn’t go as far as we would like, we are looking forward to celebrating the love of couples in this way.

to be clear, same-sex couples are very welcome at St George’s, and we shall endeavour to support you in your relationship through prayer and fellowship.

We are delighted to offer services of celebration, commitment and prayer after civil partnership, same-sex marriage or any other civil marriage.
