St George the Martyr has stood at the heart of The Borough for over 900 years. Our church is rich in history, inspiring pilgrims, poets, and writers through the centuries.

Today, St George’s is more than a historic building. It is a living community of faith where people from around the world gather for worship, prayer, music, and friendship. We honour our past while seeking God’s presence in the life of our city today.

At the centre of our life together is the belief that God’s truth, beauty, goodness, and unity are not distant ideals but present realities that can be experienced here and now.

Today we gathered for our Harvest Festival and gave thanks for five years of the Borough Food Cooperative (BFC). Five years of neighbours sharing food, friendship, and hope. In that time, over 40,000 shopping baskets have been filled, hundreds of households have been supported each week, and more than 250 volunteers have given their time regularly to make it possible. What began as a small act of response to the pandemic has become a quiet miracle beneath our feet. A community where everyone belongs and no one is left behind. Our thanks to St John Bakery for baking a stunning harvest loaf, and to all our partners, members, volunteers, and donors who joined us in giving thanks today for the harvest. The crowds followed Jesus because they had seen what he could do: healing the sick, feeding the hungry, welcoming the lost. But then he turns to them and says: “Count the cost.” Discipleship is beautiful, but it is costly. What looks like loss is life. What looks like defeat is victory. You are called by name. You are welcomed with honour, because he has already taken the lowest place, so that you may be lifted up. As we honoured God’s collaboration with women throughout the ages in the unfolding of salvation in the world, this was made tangible among us. Mthr Helen preached an astonishingly prophetic sermon of truth and justice, and music from the team at St Martin-in-the-Fields lifted our hearts in worship. A moment of beauty, dignity, and grace. It is the hard conversation we kept putting off, but finally had. It is the truth we did not want to face, but that set us free once we did. It is the change we resisted, but that turned out to be the beginning of something better. This is not the fire that destroys, but the fire that changes things. The fire that burns away what is false, until only what is rooted in love remains. This week at St George the Martyr, we will hear Luke 12:49–56 and reflect on the peace that comes after the fire has done its work.
