Two Words Changed Everything: This Sunday at St George the Martyr

Matthew thought he knew what his life would be. He had his job, his money, and his reputation, though not a good one. He was a tax collector, mistrusted by his neighbours and caught up in a system that enriched him at the expense of others. It may not have been an admirable life, but at least it was predictable.

Then Jesus walked past and spoke two words: “Follow me.” And everything changed.

Those two words set Matthew on a path he could never have imagined. He left behind the counting table and stepped into a story of mercy, a story that was bigger and stranger than the life he had known. He became a disciple and a witness to the transforming love of God; and his story has been told for centuries, reaching us here and now.

To follow Jesus is not simply about what we leave behind, but what we discover in his company: friendship, mercy, and a place at his table. The call of Christ is not confined to Matthew. It continues today. In the midst of our daily lives, sometimes quietly and sometimes in ways that surprise us, Jesus still says, “Follow me.”

This Sunday at St George’s we celebrate the Feast of St Matthew. We will hear again how Christ calls us, and we will gather as a community to be reminded of his mercy. There is a place for you.
